What is Family Pairing?
Family Pairing is TikTok's parental control system. It links your account to your teen's and lets you adjust more than fifteen safety, well-being, and privacy settings: screen time, content filters, who can message them, and what others can do with their videos.
Setting it up
- Open TikTok on YOUR phone and go to Profile > menu > Settings and privacy > Family Pairing.
- Tap Continue and select "Parent".
- Scan the QR code on your teen's phone, where they should select "Teen".
- Once linked, configure the restrictions from your account.

What's new in 2026
Time Away blocks the app during hours you define on a recurring schedule, and your teen can send you a request if they need it during that window. You can see who they follow, who follows them, what topics shape their feed, and get a notification when they post a public video or photo.
Two things often get confused here, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is Wind Down: at 10 PM the app interrupts a teen's feed with a full-screen takeover, calming music, and a guided meditation; if they stay, a second, harder-to-dismiss prompt appears. The second is notification muting, which has its own age-based hours: 9 PM to 8 AM for ages 13–15, and 10 PM to 8 AM for 16–17. Both are on by default.
And one useful thing even without Family Pairing: when your teen reports a video, they can choose to alert a parent or trusted adult.
