What Cabined Accounts are

Epic Games created "Cabined Accounts" for players under 13. They ship with social features and purchases disabled until a parent gives explicit consent, feature by feature. Your child can still play Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys with all the content they already own.

Initial setup

1. If your child is under 13, their account is automatically a Cabined Account.
2. Epic emails you to grant or deny each feature separately.
3. Go to safety.epicgames.com/parental-controls or open the controls from the in-game menu.
4. Create a 6-digit PIN to protect the settings.
5. Configure voice chat, text chat, purchases, and content permissions one at a time.

What Cabined Accounts restrict

• Voice and text chat: off until you grant permission
• Real-money purchases: blocked
• Non-Epic game downloads: blocked
• Personalized recommendations: off
• Marketing emails: off
• Epic sign-in on third-party services: blocked

Time limits, which almost nobody uses

This is the most useful control and the most overlooked. You can set how many hours your child plays per day, define specific windows when they are allowed in — say, only 5 to 7 PM — and decide whether they can ask you for more time as it runs out. They get an in-game warning at 30 minutes remaining, and once it is gone they cannot get back in until the next day or the next window.

If you turn on time reports, you get a dashboard with a daily breakdown of what they played, including when you granted extra time, and you can subscribe to a weekly email summary so you do not have to go look.

Spending: what you can and cannot set

Epic applies an automatic cap of $100 in daily spending to accounts of under-13s. This is worth stating precisely because it is often misread: it is not a figure you can adjust, it is fixed, and purchases above it go through by entering your PIN. What you can do is make sure no purchase happens without your approval, by requiring the PIN for all Epic Games payments.

What's new in 2026

Every island or experience inside Fortnite carries its own age rating, and you can block everything above a level you choose in one move. Unlocking a specific one requires your PIN. Alongside it sits the option to restrict your child from building their own games in the editor.

The newer thing worth checking is different: since Fortnite added characters that converse using artificial intelligence, by voice and text, there is a specific permission for it. Your child cannot talk to them unless you turn on voice and written communication with AI features. It lives in the parental controls, in the general section, and toggles with your PIN.

Warning signs to watch for

• Unexpected Epic Games charges appear on your payment method
• There is spending that falls outside the cap: check purchases made through the console store
• Voice chat is still active even though you turned it off: the console's own chat is separate and configured elsewhere
• They get irritable when play is cut short and use the screen as their main way to calm down
