What is Roblox?

Roblox is a platform where users create and play experiences (games) built by the community. While it looks like a game for kids, it includes chat, social interactions, and in-app purchases with a virtual currency called Robux. Since January 2026, chat features require mandatory age verification, and new age-based accounts are rolling out in mid-2026.

New age-based account system (June 2026)

Roblox is launching two new account types:

Accounts automatically progress as users age: Kids to Select at age 9, Select to Standard at age 16.

Initial setup

  1. Create your child's account with their real date of birth (this determines automatic restrictions).
  2. Go to Settings > Parental Controls in the app or on the web.
  3. Link your parent account for remote management using a parental PIN.
  4. Review communication settings (chat is off by default for kids under 9).
  5. Set a monthly spending limit for Robux.

What's new in 2025–2026

Roblox made age verification mandatory worldwide in January 2026 for chat and 18+ experiences, using facial age estimation. Chat for kids under 9 is off by default (parents can enable it). AI-powered moderation now covers voice chat in 8 languages. Parents can see which experiences their child spends the most time in and block specific experiences or people. The new Roblox Kids and Select accounts launching in June 2026 add even more granular parental controls through age 15, including game-by-game approval.

Warning signs to watch for

Important: Many kids enter a fake age when creating their account. This disables automatic protections. Make sure the date of birth is correct.
Tip: Use the parental dashboard to see which experiences your child plays the most. Review unfamiliar ones by searching their names on Roblox's website.
